It seems highly probable that the objects item- ized are almost all drawings, even when they are not explicitly indicated as such, although we cannot rule out that at least some may have been small clay sculptures. However, we find at least ‘a representation of the Passion, made in relief’ (una storia di Passione fatta in forma), thus probably a serial work. Other things in the list might also be at least indirectly linked to sculp- ture. It seems to me not implausible that the ‘head of Our Lady ascending to Heaven’ (la testa di nostra donna che va in cielo) may be a draw- ing made from the Porta della Mandorla on the north side of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, a work that Leonardo certainly copied. The head of the young man traced in pen on sheet 446 E in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence, evokes the analogous detail of one of the angels supporting the mandorla by Nanni di Bianco. Considering that the sheet also includes an incipit of a letter addressed to Pistoia and the note ‘[...ber] 1478 | began the two Madonna ' ([...bre] 1478 incominciai le 2 vergini Marie), Leonardo prepared this drawing just at the time in which Verrocchio too, then working on the Forteguerri Cenotaph for the Cathedral in It seems highly probable that the objects item-

Nevertheless, we can be fairly sure that the materials most used by Leonardo were terra- cotta and wax, with three possible functions: as models for the studio or for didactic purposes; as works finished in themselves; or as works des- tined to be cast in bronze. In the third case, one immediately thinks of the ill-fated affair of the Sforza Monument, as well as of the monument never realized for Gian Giacomo Trivulzio. For the latter, Leonardo also drew up a quite detailed budget in about 1508. He even envisaged using marble, although it cannot be ruled out that he might have planned to avail himself of a special- ist, perhaps his old friend Benedetto Briosco or the young and enthusiastic follower Agostino Busti (called Bambaia).5 In the case of the first two possible functions, we are amply informed by Leonardo himself or by sources very close to him. ‘Have one made of wax a finger long’ (fanne un Nevertheless, we can be fairly sure that the
