Wade, known in early life as Wade Lavender, was born at Woodbridge, Suffolk. He went to London at a young age, where he began to publish verse influenced by Byron, Keats and especially Shelley.
With skill Wade eventually arranged the release of Parkes and the other survivors of the captivity, and in 1861 he formed part of the staff of the first legation in Peking.
