Thomas Cromwell byl anglický státník a tajemník krále Jindřicha VIII. V mládí žil v Itálii a po určitou dobu byl žoldákem. Po návratu do Anglie vstoupil do služeb Thomase Wolseyho a následně se stal oblíbencem samotného krále. Stál v čele reforem anglického parlamentarismu a tehdy vznikající anglikánské církve.
