Biography of Luiz InacioLuladaSilva, better known as Lula, president of Brazil from 2003 to 2011 and from 2023. As part of the Petrobras scandal, in July 2017 Lula was found guilty of corruption and money laundering.
Lula led the organization of the party and ran for governor of São Paulo that same year. In August 1983, he helped found Brazil’s United Workers’ Center (Central Única dos Trabalhadores/CUT).
Lula struggled to shake the image of someone lacking experience in public administration. His Marxist views caused alarm among many who did not know what to expect if Lula were elected President of Brazil.
