William Haldane Porter was born on 15 May 1867 at 23 University Square, Belfast within the precincts of Queen's University. [1 ] His name was given simply as William.

Richard Burdon Haldane, 1st Viscount Haldane, KT, OM, PC, FRS, FSA, FBA (/ ˈ h ɔː l d eɪ n/; 30 July 1856 – 19 August 1928) was a Scottish lawyer, philosopher, influential Liberal and later Labour politician and statesman.
In 1928 he joined Merz and McLellan engineering firm, and in 1941 became a partner. In the summer of 1932 he was a member of a Fabian Society group which visited the Soviet Union, where he studied power stations and energy supply.
