Robert Preston, celým jménem Robert Preston Meservey, vyrůstal v Los Angeles, kde studoval Abraham Lincoln High School a navštěvoval kurzy herectví v Pasadeně. Po dovršení šestnácti let odešel k divadelní kočovné společnosti. V roce 1938 podepsal první smlouvu s filmovou společností Paramount Pictures.
