Rita Lee Jonesová se narodila 31. prosince 1947 do rodiny, jejíž předkové byli zčásti přistěhovalci z jihu USA a do Brazílie odešli po americké občanské válce. Proslavila se v 60. letech s formací Os Mutantes a hnutím Tropicália, které spojovalo pop a psychedelický rock s brazilským zvukem.
