Commissioned by Joseph Stalin, [1 ] the film is a biography of the partisan leader and Ukrainian Bolshevik Nikolai Shchors. [2 ] Shchors is played by Yevgeny Samoylov (1912–2006).
The film takes place in Ukraine during the Civil War. In the center of the plot is Apollo Shmiguev, loyal to all regimes, capable of benefiting from any situation.
