Colonel John Cunningham Kelton of the 9th MO Volunteer Infantry arrived in Boonville to find a town in turmoil. Two weeks earlier, Colonel Jefferson C. Davis, in command at Je Boonville was a fferson City, was convinced that possible focal point of Price’s Mis- souri River Valley Operations. Lexington, however, was where Price placed his forces and Boonville and Boonville continued to receive reinforcements. At various points, hree Indiana regiments were en- camped at the fairgrounds. Two of them, the 18th and the 22nd, were tasked with driving secessionists out of Glasgow. A lapse in communication resulted in the regiments firing into each other. The more se- riously wounded were evacuated to Jefferson City while the remnants of those regiments, along with the 26th Indiana prepared to move out. They departed on 22 September.
