Miles Christopher Dempsey se narodil 15. prosince 1896 ve Wallasey. Navštěvoval Shrewsburyskou střední školu Královskou vojenskou školu v Sandhurstu. Po jejím absolvování nastoupil v roce 1915 ke Královskému berkshirskému pluku, s nímž sloužil na západní frontě ve Francii.
